“The Trinity Trumpet”

“Seeking Him, Serving Him”

Volume 48 Number 9              September 2015

Pastor's Pen - Carol's Notes - Numbers - Events - Missions - Pantry

From the Pastor’s Desk!

The world seems to have gotten crazier all of a sudden, terrorism, earthquakes, financial crisis, senseless shootings, etc. May I remind you that God is still in control, He’s still on His Throne? The Bible says we Live by Faith, not by Sight. Your Faith determines how Big God is. What Kind of Faith do you have? How BIG is God? The song says He’s Big enough to rule the universe, yet small enough to live inside my heart.
David had a Great, BIG God. When the Israelites faced the Giant Goliath of the Philistines, everybody was afraid of him. “He’s so BIG,” they said. David said, “Yes, he may be big, but he’s too BIG to miss.” David believed God was Bigger. If God had helped deliver David from the bear & the wolf, surely He could deliver David from the Giant. David Believed, he lived his life, “I Can’t, but God Can!”
Mary & Martha had a Great, BIG God. When their brother died, they faced a BIG enemy, Death. After Jesus had waited 4 days, Lazarus was surely dead, they should have lost all Hope, but they Believed anyway. “If you had been here, he would not have Died, but even now, we Believe.” Mary & Martha believed God was Bigger, even bigger than Death. Mary & Martha learned “Nothing is Impossible with God!”
We have a Great, BIG God. When we face anything, whether a Giant like cancer, heart attack, financial crisis, or even death, God is still BIGGER, God is still Greater. We have to Believe, to Believe that God is BIGGER, Greater, that anything we face in this world. When we Can’t, God Can! Nothing is Impossible with God! God can meet our every Need, Any Need, all we have to do is ASK!

    Carol's Notes

As I considered my article for this month, it was difficult to think about anything except the losses we experienced over the past few days. We lost our friend, Lois Linkous, and Bill’s friend and “Blimpie Breakfast Buddy”, Carl Douglass. Our community experienced the tragic and sudden death on a live TV broadcast of two young people with bright futures and so much more living to do.
I’m sure the funerals or memorial services for these young people will be far more difficult than were the services for Lois and Carl. Both of their services, though very different in style, were celebrations of lives well lived and the joy in heaven upon their home going.
Music was a great part of both services, gospel music for Lois and hymns of the faith for Carl. One of the hymns at Carl’s memorial was new to me but I really liked both the melody and the words. I jotted down the words and the name of the writer. I came to discover that the writer penned the words while pondering the death of a friend. As she thought about contradictory “pairs” - life and death, death and resurrection, winter and spring - she remembered a poem by T.S. Eliot which contained the phrase “In the end is our beginning.” This led to the hope-filled message of the song that out of one will come the other whenever God chooses to bring it about. These are the words she wrote.

In the bulb there is a flower In the seed an apple tree In cocoons a hidden promise Butterflies will soon be free In the cold and snow of winter There’s a spring that waits to be Unrevealed until its season Something God alone can see There’s a song in every silence Seeking word and melody There’s a dawn in every darkness Bringing hope to you and me From the past will come the future What it holds a mystery Unrevealed until its season Something God alone can see
In our end is our beginning In our time, infinity In our doubt there is believing In our life, eternity In our death a resurrection At the last a victory Unrevealed until its season Something God alone can see
When our world, our local community is shattered by catastrophic events and we struggle to understand our out-of-control world, how comforting and reassuring to be reminded (just as in the words to “Hymn of Promise”) that there is resurrection after death and a great victory awaiting all followers of Christ.
September brings a new church year. What a perfect time for us to recommit together to be of one mind, one heart, one accord as we strive together to make a difference in our community.
Have a super September and, as always, KEEP SINGING!
