From the Pastor’s Desk!

Happy Thanksgiving! The psalmist says, “Enter His gates with Thanksgiving & into His courts with Praise. For the Lord is good, His mercy is everlasting & His truth endures to all generations.”
Are you Thankful for Jesus Christ, the Son of God who died on the Cross so that All could be saved? There are 2 important things about your salvation that we can be Thankful for - an Empty Grave & Eternal Life. Jesus is Alive! He has risen from the dead. Praise God! Because He lives, we too shall live. “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is Eternal Life.” The Eternal Gift of Salvation, “whoever believes in Him may have everlasting life.”
Are you Thankful for other Christians, the family of God? “As many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God,” we are all blood-brothers & sisters in Christ. Paul told the Philippians, “I Thank God upon every remembrance of you.” He told the Romans, “I Thank God for you all.” Jesus said, “A new Commandment I give you, Love one another.”
Are you Thankful on a Continual Basis, thankful for what God has done, what He is doing & what He is going to do? Paul was Stoned, Shipwrecked & Imprisoned, yet he said, “Thank You, Lord.” He had poor eyesight, poor health, he was not good-looking, yet he said, “Thank You, Lord.” In a Financial crisis, do we say, “Thank You, Lord, we have food to eat.” In spite of physical & health problems, do we say, “Thank You, Lord, I’m still able to get around.” In a Spiritual situation, do we say, “Thank You, Lord, You never change, I can never lose my salvation.” God is Good!
The Secret of Thanksgiving - don’t worry about Dying; Jesus died to save us from Hell; don’t worry about Living; God never changes, no matter what happens; & don’t worry about the Future; He’s coming back to take us to Heaven, to live with Him forever.

    Carol's Notes

We recently had some family time together sharing special events in the lives of two of our granddaughters. Our granddaughter, Morgen was home just overnight to repack and say her goodbyes before driving across country to her new duty station at Whidbey Island, Washington. Our granddaughter, Christine, celebrated her 15th birthday that same weekend. We were so pleased that she wanted to stay in town and celebrate with family at one of our favorite restaurants. During that same weekend we discussed our plans for Thanksgiving dinner. It is still difficult for us to comprehend that we no longer have a home place in Thaxton where we can gather as a family. With all the emotions of the weekend (sending Morgen across country, celebrating with Christine and thinking about the coming holidays without Mom and Dad), I was feeling very low and sad.
It almost goes without saying that music can ease my sadness, but for me the music comes wrapped in the movie The Sound of Music. One day when I was alone at home I put the movie on and felt my spirits begin to lift as I got caught up in the story and music. When I heard Maria sing “My Favorite Things”, it dawned on me that naming her favorite things brought her joy and comfort. Her list of favorite things could also be considered her reasons to be thankful. I stopped the movie after that song and remembered my husband’s recent challenge to write down 10 things for which I was thankful. As I began to name those things out loud, I have no idea how many I named in just a matter of a few minutes but it was far more than 10. Between the movie, recent Sunday school lessons and Vernon’s recent messages on prayer, I was beautifully reminded that our Bible contains quite a list of “favorite things” related to our Christian life, the promises of our Lord. Here are a few promises that came to mind:
     The Lord hears our cries.
The Lord will answer when I call on Him.
The Lord will give rest to your burdened soul.
The Lord has given us His spirit to guide us.
Everlasting life is ours when we believe.
As the song says, “when the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things and then I don’t feel so bad.” I encourage you to name your favorite things, the things for which you are thankful and be sure that list includes the promises from God which are binding and true.
Hope your Thanksgiving includes lots of family time and delicious food and remember to include time to...KEEP SINGING! praises and thanksgiving to God.
