    Carol's Notes

Have you ever put something away for safe keeping and forgotten where you put it? A few weeks ago I was doing some much needed straightening of the desk in our spare bedroom. During that process I came across a priceless treasure that I thought had been lost forever. Imagine my joy when I found a cassette tape marked “Rev. Emory Rogers.” I could hardly believe my eyes and was already in tears when I showed it to Bill and told him what the tape contained. Bill put it in the tape player (yes, we still have one!) and from that tape came the voice of my Daddy, a voice I have not heard for almost 31 years.
Hearing my Daddy’s voice flooded my mind with so many memories. I remembered as a small child the fun of finding a good hiding place so that Daddy could hunt for me when he got home from work. I saw the two of us fishing together and the joy we shared when I caught my first good-sized fish. I could see us in the backyard as he pitched the softball to me. He promised me $1.00 if I could hit it over the fence. Finally, one afternoon I connected with that softball hitting it over the fence, over the street and into our neighbor’s yard. Daddy paid up! I could see him sitting on the couch with his Bible and books as he prepared for a Sunday school lesson or sermon. I remembered as a teenager how I cherished his hugs as he tried to console my heart that had been broken by one of the “frogs” I dated. As an adult I remembered my excitement upon seeing him sitting in the yard waiting for the kids and me to get home after a long day’s journey. A father watching for his child to come home – what a beautiful start to a week of vacation!
Sadly, it has been said that people often struggle in their relationship with God if they haven’t had a good earthly role model. What a great show of love by my Heavenly Father that he chose Emory Rogers to be my Daddy. I look forward to the day when we are reunited and can share eternity together.
For our church, June will be a busy month with VBS, a Sunday to honor and remember our earthly fathers and a Sunday to share the ordinance of Communion and remember the sacrifice our Heavenly Father made for us.
Trust you will have a joy-filled June and remember, as always, to KEEP SINGING!
