You would have to have been hiding under a rock not to have seen or heard the news reports of tornado destruction in Tuscaloosa, Alabama or Joplin, Missouri or even right here in our own state. It’s hard to imagine having to face that kind of devastation and loss. One man in Joplin who was interviewed by the news media said he would like to find just two of his possessions. One was his wife’s wedding ring, the other was a leather case with a Bible inside, a gift from his wife. As I sat in the comfort of my family room and gave thought to my possessions, I wondered what I would look for amidst the rubble if that happened to me. Could I hope to locate any of my precious pieces of jewelry? Would it be possible that any of mother’s collection of Precious Moments figures would be found unbroken or that any of the antique pieces from the homes of my grandparents would survive. What about my teapots, most of them gifts from my husband and children. Would any of mother’s paintings or my daughter’s cross-stitching be salvageable? What about Bill’s antique oil lamps or all those Tennessee collectibles? My home is filled with things that are precious to me because of their connection to my family, but I couldn’t help thinking of that man’s desire to find his special case and Bible. Aren’t we glad that amidst the chaos and destructive forces in life that the promises found in God’s word are steadfast and true. I hope that the man in Joplin finds his Bible, but even if he doesn’t I hope he has many of the scriptures and hymns of the faith hidden in his heart to be a source of strength and encouragement for the days ahead. Here are a few of the scriptures that came to mind as I thought of him.
¨ Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. (Nehemiah 8:10)
¨ God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
¨ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
¨ The Lord is my strength and song. (Exodus 15:2)
What a foundation on which to rebuild!
The calendar now reads June so that means end of school, graduation and Father’s Day are just around the corner – sounds like just the start of a busy summer.
Ya’ll have a joyous June and remember, Keep Singing!

North Carolina Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell

Tucked away on the eastern tip of Oak Island, the North Carolina Baptist Assembly at Fort Caswell occupies the site of a former Civil War fort. Since 1949, when the Baptist State Convention bought the property from the federal government, Caswell has been an instrument of peace, offering NC Baptists and others a place of quiet reflection and relaxation. We invite you to come and visit us here at Caswell, and discover the peace and beauty that thousands of others have enjoyed.
Youth Camp at Caswell, July 18–23, includes personal quiet times, small group Bible studies, recreation, worship, large group celebrations and church group devotions. Camp Caswell is for rising 7th – 12th graders. In addition, Bible study classes are provided for adult chaperones and college students, and there will be Youth Ministry training for the adults who attend each week of camp. The theme for 2011 will be: Assisting students in discovering their true identity. If we are created in the image of God - do we really know what that means? For most youth and adults, the week is a “mountain top experience” which challenges and strengthens them in their walk of faith. Over the past eight years, we have seen 24,891 decisions for Christ.~~ D A Y T I M E ~~
