From the Pastor’s Desk!

2016 is over, gone & done with. How was last year for you, Great, Good, Average, So-So, Not Good? What are you expecting this year, same-old, same-old? Most people are not living, they’re just surviving from week to week, month to month. The Bible tells us How to Thrive, not just Survive!
Rise Thankfully. Philippians teaches us to “Rejoice in the Lord always.” Psalms 103 gives us Reasons to Rejoice - Redeemed, Restored & Renewed. Jesus gives abundant life, abundant forgiveness & abundant power as well as everlasting Life. Be Thankful we are Alive, still looking at the green side of the grass.
Pray Expectantly. Philippians says, “in everything by prayer & supplication, let your requests be made known to God.” The Bible teaches that we pray & believe; then we receive. We “ask in Faith.” But we pray & doubt, then go without. “We have not, because we ask not” or “ask amiss”, for the wrong Things, or wrong Reasons. Pray Believing; God hears, God answers, & expect God to deliver.
Speak Kindly. Philippians says, “whatever things are true, pure, lovely, a good report.” The Cure for a Critical Tongue: Think Positive – the good, true, pure, lovely; Think Praise – God inhabits the Praises of His people; Think Pleasant – Focus on the Good, not the Bad. What you Say & How you Say, can Build Up or Tear Down.
Heard the Saying – Live Simply, Laugh Often & Love Deeply? Expand on that Saying - Think Deeply, Speak Gently, Love Much, Laugh Often, Work Hard, Give Freely & Be Kind. Love Deeply, like Christ, Forgive Quickly, like Christ, & Work Worshipfully, give God the Glory. Paul says, “Be Anxious about Nothing, Pray about Everything, Give Thanks Continually, Think about the Good Things.”

    Carol's Notes

As I sit alone in the quiet of my family room with only the light from the Christmas tree to break the darkness, it’s hard to believe that Christmas day has already come and gone. All the gifts have been opened, lots of good food consumed and precious time has been spent with family. All the weeks of shopping, planning and anticipating and it’s over in just a few hours. I’m always a little sad when time comes to take the decorations down because that really does mean the season has come to an end. Christmas 2016 will soon be just a memory. This year, however, I’m going to keep in mind the words Vin Scully spoke at his last Dodgers broadcast before retiring, “Don’t be sad that it’s over. Smile because it happened.”
Christmas 2016 brings me lots of reasons to smile. One of those is the beautiful way the choir led us on our 4-week “Journey to Bethlehem”. Thank you, choir, for your commitment to and faithfulness through weeks of practice. My Church Family gave me reasons to smile with your words of encouragement and your many positive comments about experiencing Christmas a little different this year. This year will come to an end in a few days but I’ll welcome 2017 with a smile on my face because of wonderful things that happened in 2016.
As we turn the calendar to 2017, one thing we need to carry into this New Year is hope. The apostle, Paul, considered hope one of the three great pillars of Christianity. In a 1987 New Year’s message from Dr. Norman Vincent Peale he reminds us that when we say “I wish” it usually means we don’t believe the wish will come true. But when we hope then expectancy comes into play. Hope causes expectation to stir in us. To quote Dr. Peale “If you can reach the point – and you can reach it – where hope and expectation blend into faith and conviction, nothing can defeat you.”
Dr. Peale observes that the nearer we come to the Savior the more hope we have because we cannot live with Jesus and be defeated. Doesn’t that sound like a great way to enter 2017 – full of hope and expectation. We don’t walk into 2017 alone but with a loving God walking with us. The words to “You’ll Never Walk Alone” remind us to “walk on, walk on with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone.”
One of our favorite hymns tells us “my hope is built on nothing less that Jesus’ blood and righteousness”.
Hope in our heart, looking for Opportunities to share the gospel, Praying for God’s guidance and wisdom, and living in Expectancy – sounds like a formula for success in 2017.
Happy New Year to each of you and as always......KEEP SINGING!
