Carol's Notes

Wow! How fast the month of July flew by! I had looked forward to my trip to Italy for months & now it has come & gone. We had some difficulty getting out the U.S. (a story too long to relate in this article) but once we finally arrived, we had a wonderful time. I did my very best to spoil my grandchildren, eat lots of authentic Italian food & enjoy the gorgeous sights of Italy.

Thanks to all who kept us singing in my absence. Thanks to my “Broken” sister & friend, Sherry Overstreet, for playing the piano. Thanks, Rick Dellinger, for coming “home” to sing on July 5th. My plan was to be back home on July 10th & back to church on the 12th but we extended our trip to make up for the time we lost, so I owe a big Thank You to the Choir for rehearsing in my absence & to Vernon for leading that rehearsal & leading the choir on that Sunday.

Thanks, also, to Robert Earl Craig for his beautiful original composition that he sang for communion & for his willingness, along with Mike Tinsley, to fill in at the last moment & do praise music for us. We finished the month with Ethan, Brittany & Katie leading us in praise music. It was good to see these youth singing again.

As we turn the calendar, August brings us another month with 5 Sundays. We’ll do our traditional “5th Sunday Sing” on August 30th, so mark your calendars. “Broken” has been in touch with Stillwaters Coffee House & plans are being made for our debut performance there. As plans progress & a date is set, we’ll let you know. Hope some of you will be able to go with us. I would encourage you to check out Stillwaters right here in town on Bridge Street. Lots of good things are going on there & the music I’ve heard the times Bill & I have been has been terrific.

Is that sleigh bells I hear in the distance? Believe it or not, I’m already looking at & listening to new Christmas music for the choir. By September I hope to have selected it, ordered & received it & have it in the hands of the choir. Pray for God’s leading in this process as we plan for this special time of year.

Keep a song in your hearts & I’ll see you Sunday!

Missions Trip to Pennsylvania 2009

On Sat., July 18, around 8:30am, we left Trinity with seven youth & three other leaders for a weeklong mission’s trip to Pinebrook Bible Conference in PA. The goal of the trip was to provide the youth the opportunity to see how camping ministry works, hopefully to help them to grow in their walk with the Lord. While we were there, we worked in the Dining Hall, tore down a cabin, repainted & fixed up a meeting room, grew in our walk with the Lord & ministered to staff members.

Sunday was our first work day, the group had an opportunity to work in the Dining Hall, where they served the guests & helped wash the dishes. This was a great experience to start off the week because it was something brand new to most of the youth, God used this experience to show us that the week was about service.

While planning for the trip, we planned to paint the outside of about 12 or 13 small cabins; however, the group that was there before us finished the painting so we were assigned to tear down an old abandoned cabin. This was extremely hard work because it required us to use gloves, crowbars, a sledgehammer, & all the muscle we could muster to tear down this cabin to make room for the camp to sell the property. Most of our time in the afternoon was spent tearing down this cabin piece by piece & God used that experience to show us that even though we may not have the best or most enjoyable job, we can still try to rejoice & work for Him. Another job that we were able to do was to fix up the room where the youth met for the week by filling in the holes in the wall & painting it. This job took us one rainy afternoon & I am proud to say that we were able to finish this job & it made a great improvement on the room.

The final thing we focused on during the trip was our walk with the Lord. This came through two different sessions each day. During the first session in the morning, I taught our youth & all the other youth who were there, focusing on 1 Timothy 4:7-9, training for Godliness. Believers should be going above & beyond, training ourselves to be more like Christ. The second session in the evening was the main meeting, taught by Dr. Ron Blue, a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary. His messages were based in Colossians in which he challenged everyone to grow in their walk with the Lord, to rekindle the fire in their relationship with Christ.

The highlight of the week was not through one of the planned events but through a chance meeting with one of the staff members. One of the staff members was an autistic 17-year-old girl. It was amazing to see our youth minister to her through the week by buying her a birthday cake for her birthday & reaching out to her. I was impressed by the work ethic & growth of the kids as they served the Lord through this different opportunity & I am excited to see what God is going to do through their lives over the next few months here at Trinity!
