The Pastor's Pen!

Happy New Year! New Year’s Resolutions are usually Good, because they let us Re-Examine our own life. It is good to set Goals & to Confess our Failures. However, Resolutions are Limited, because doing good cannot Save us, trying Harder makes us no Better, & we usually don’t keep them, because we are working in our own Strength. But let’s look at some Resolutions of Bible Characters:
Daniel’s Resolution to Live a Holy Life, in Daniel 1. Daniel was taken from his home to a strange land, but was chosen to serve the King. Daniel dared to be Different, Different than other people, not living as the world lives. Daniel was Dedicated, Dedicated to God, wanted to live a life pleasing to God, no matter what. Daniel was Determined, Determined to Live according to God’s Word, not to Defile himself. There is plenty to Defile our minds & Hearts; living like the world & our Worship.
David’s Resolution Concerning God’s Word in Psalm 119. David Failed God by committing adultery and murder. David says, “I will meditate on Thy precepts” “I will delight myself in Thy statues,” – not drudgery, but a daily delight. I will not forget Thy Word.” “Thy Word have I hid in heart that I may sin against Thee.” (Psa 119:11) The Bible will keep you from Sinning, or Sinning will keep you from the Bible.
Jacob’s Resolution to Tithe in Gen 28, is the story of Jacob’s Ladder. Jacob was fleeing from his brother Esau because he had cheated him out of his Birthright. At Bethel, Jacob made a resolution to Tithe to God when he had nothing to pay it with. Tithing –Abraham Started it (Gen 14:20), Malachi Commanded it (Mal 3:10), Jesus Commended it (Matt 23:23), & All Christians are expected to do it (1 Cor 16:1-2). Tithing is the easiest place to Fail, & most Practical way to Prove our Faith.

“I am Resolved no longer to linger, charmed by this world’s delights.”

    Carol's Notes

Several friends of our family lost loved ones during the Christmas season. As we as Christians believe, we can hold on to the truth that we will see our loved ones again in heaven. I was recently given a brief earthly glimpse of how amazing that reunion is going to be. My children, their spouses and all my grandchildren except Derrik met in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the day after Christmas. My niece and her two daughters and new granddaughter also joined us. It was fun to watch and listen as the oldest of those girls talked non-stop trying to get caught up with each other’s lives after months of being apart. The girls’ lives are all so different but the family bond is strong; one is a new mother, one in medical school studying to be a pediatric oncologist, Morgen is serving in the Navy and Samantha is working full-time and living in the Durham area. These few hours we were together were filled with good food and great family fellowship. As joyful as this time together was, we experienced only a fraction of how great those reunions in heaven are going to be. We’re told Heaven is a place of great joy and certainly one of those joys will be our family reunions but the greatest reunion will be with our Savior.
As the clean slate of a New Year waits for us to write on it, consider what meaning “Happy New Year” has for us as believers:

Hold fast to your faith
Assemble with the saints
Pray earnestly
Prepare your heart
Yield not to temptation
Neglect not your talents and opportunities
Examine yourself
Work diligently for the Lord
Yield yourself to righteousness
Exercise yourself in Godliness
Aim for sinlessness
Redeem the time

Happy 2018 to each of you. Let’s face the unknown of this new year with a song in our heart!.........KEEP SINGING!
